Newfoundland is the most easterly destination on the North American continent and in fact, has its own time zone a half hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Getting here by Air

The closest airport is Gander International Airport, an hour and a half’s drive away. Most international flights fly into St. John’s International Airport (YYT) or also Deer Lake International Airport. From the airport, a rental vehicle is a good option.

The main surface links to the Island of Newfoundland are by superferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Superferries carry hundreds of vehicles and passengers daily between North Sydney and Port aux Basques in southwestern Newfoundland, and between North Sydney and Argentia, a 90 minute drive from St. John’s from June to September.

Getting Here By Road

Point A marks the turn off from the Trans Canada Highway and Point B marks Twillingate.

  • From the TCH1 travelling east turn onto Route 340 to Lewisporte/Twillingate (Road to the Isles)
  • On the TCH 1 travelling west to Gander, turn onto Route 330, then Routes 331 and 340 to Twillingate.(Road to the Isles)
  • Lewisporte to Twillingate: 85km
  • Gander to Twillingate: 90km
     

When driving to Twillingate you will pass through many other small fishing communities such as Boyd's Cove, Summerford, Virgin Arm and Newville.

When on Twillingate island, there are several very small fishing communities that you will pass through before reaching the main town.

 You will pass by Purcell's Harbour and Little Harbour.

The town of Twillingate is about 5km from the Twillingate-New World Island causeway.

Getting to Amber Retreat

Ferry Route

Amber Retreat is in Durrell Twillingate. When connecting with via Route 340 to the main road of Twillingate (you'll reach a T-intersection), there is a choice to turn to the left to the North island or South towards Durrell. Turn right towards Durrell and continue on this road almost to its end at French Beach.

You'll pass Auk Island Winery, the turn-off sign for Durrell Museum, Foodex store, Durrell Dental Clinic, a small wharf with an ornate red sail boat on the jetty. From here the road winds a few more times. When you see a second wharf on the left, you'll have the turn-off to Slades Lane on your right. It is also the road to the Spiller's Cove hike. Turn right and about 100 meters further you'll see the yellow saltbox house with its Amber Retreat signage on the front deck railing.
